 During Liberia's long civil war from the 1980s to the early 2000s, many families fled violence, seeking safety in neighboring countries like Guinea and Sierra Leone. In refugee camps, they faced challenges like food shortages and crowded living conditions, while children missed out on schooling. Despite these difficulties, refugees hoped for peace to return to Liberia so they could rebuild their lives and communities.

'Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes On the World' is a short documentary about students at a special summer program in New York City. This program was created by the International Rescue Committee for kids who had to leave their homes because of dangerous conflicts. The film shares the personal and touching stories of these students as they escape war and find new homes in America. It follows their adventures, challenges, and successes during one important summer.
